The Movie:
On a remote farm somewhere on the border of Connecticut and Rhode Island, Saul (Rich Tretheway) is keeping himself safe from all the shit that's gone down. Nuclear holocaust, zombie infestation, vigilantes (looters and violent people), and a roommate named George (Andre Boudreau) who thinks he the President of the United States. Saul keeps zombies chained up in his barn as twisted way of having family. He goes out for his morning sweep of walking corpses when he meets up with ex-cop Josh (Brandon Louis Aponte), out on his own and looking for somewhere to go. Back to the farm they go and Josh stays there.
Three months later a small group of wanderers finds their way to the farm and stay. After a minor mishap involving one of the wanderers and gut-hungry zombies in the barn, the group is faced with the challenges of a group of vigilantes and some more zombie troubles. The President is much more insane that he seems to be and his role in the film leads to the movie's title.
This won't take long. Zombie Allegiance is exactly what should be expected from a cheaply made zombie movie with very little by way of originality. Shitty looking zombies, bad splatter effects, pacing trouble, dialogue that sounds forced, and acting that ranges from so-so to awful. It seems the writer/director is trying for something more than a generic zombie movie with the injection of the vigilantes (who barely amount to anything) and the story of the crazy President, and that's admirable. The thing is, so much time is spent in exposition and attempted character development that really goes nowhere, that it turns out to be a real bore.
A couple of actors did a decent job, such as Kyle Gass look-alike Rich Tretheway and Michael Reed, but to say that is really a way of trying to find something decent from the 90 minutes spent watching the film. The director certainly tried hard, and kudos for getting practically unpaid actresses to take they're tops off. Also a few points are scored for a human/zombie bout of fornication. But for the reported $20,000 it cost to make the movie, many people have put out much better product with even less money.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Shot on video, the picture is all right. The colors look decent with lots of lush green trees and shiny red sauce. The image is pretty clear with no signs of artifacts or aliasing. The aspect ratio on the disc is 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen for those keeping track. The audio is a simple 2.0 channel track that does the job. Nothing noteworthy. The only extras are some trailers for other releases from the manufacturer.
The Final Word:
A pretty lame entry into the over saturated zombie category. The non-existent extras add to the difficulty of recommending this one, even for zombie fanatics.
