  • Cheezy Action Trailers

    Released by: Cheezy Flicks
    Released on: 9/11/2007
    Directors: various
    Cast: various
    Year: 2006
    Purchase from Amazon

    The Movie:
Cheezy Flicks presents one in a series of trailer compilations highlighting specific genres (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.), this time around focusing in on the action movie. Here's what's featured:

    Morgan the Pirate (1960) / Journey to the Lost City (1960) / Sandokan the Great (1963) / Sword of Sherwood Forest (1960) / Safari Drums (1953) / Jungle Flight (1947) / Hell On Devil's Island (1957) / Mogambo (1953) / Tropic Zone (1953) / King Solomon's Mines (1950) / Tarzan's Fight For Life (1958) / Jungle Heat (1957) / Naked Africa (1957) / Man From Deep River (1972) / She Gods of Shark Reef (1958) / Tarzan and the Great River (1967) / Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959) / Virgin Sacrifice (1959) / Watusi (1959) / Walk Into Hell (1956) / Nature Girl and the Slaver (1957) / Manhunt in the African Jungles (1943) / Jungle Attack (1956) / Perils of Nyoka (1942) / Hatari! (1962) / Two Sane Nuts (1948) / Tarzan Goes to India (1962) / Zulu (1964) / The Brigand of Kandahar (1965)

The running time for the list above is just under an hour. As can be seen by the list, most of the movies covered are from the mid-1960s and earlier, with the exception of 1970s film Man From Deep River, which was thrown in for whatever reason. Along with wooden acting, look for a few dated lines like “The girl from nowhere, who gets in men's blood like the jungle fever” which probably didn't mean the same thing 50 years ago as it does now. Spike Lee's joint would be confusing to whoever wrote that line.

One thing that might be perplexing to many concerning this release is the title. The movies covered are adventure movies not action, at least not by modern definition, and more so they can be almost entirely pinned down to an even more specific genre, the jungle epic. Kind of misleading for those who pick this up looking for car chases and gunfights. But a lot of these trailers haven't shown up on any comps that this fan has watched, so it's nice to have them no matter what category they can be lumped into.

    Video/Audio/Extras:
All the trailers are shown here with a 4:3 full screen ratio, and the quality varies from crap to crappier. None of them look great and many are really beaten to shit. Some trailers are so bad they are missing pieces and jump all around. The first trailer is nearly unwatchable, which might make some wonder why it was even included on the disc, let alone the first trailer shown. The audio isn't much better. Aside from the expected pops and hissing from trailers in this condition, the levels of each are inconsistent. Some are really quiet and some loud. The audio and video presentation is pretty disappointing.

For supplements, there an “Also from Cheezy Flicks” selection which features trailers for some other releases from the company: Jessie James Rides Again / The Day of the Triffids / Horrors of the Black Museum / Robot Monster. Also is a feature called “Intermission Time”, which displays some animated concession stand commercials that used to play during intermission. And, at the menu if you push to the left, a piece of cheese lights up and plays some extra things. An Easter egg!! Remember those? This one gives us a silent Mighty Joe Young 8mm trailer, a trailer for The Doll Squad, Nyoka in the Caves of Death (a silent 8mm serial running 7:29), and a trailer for Ten Violent Women.

    The Final Word:
Aside from the less than desirable presentation (plus the fact that you can't select individual trailers if you want), the compilation may not play well at a party, mainly because the trailers are almost all really tame. You won't find much for violence, nudity (well, there are tribal boobies), sleaze, or monsters. But for the trailer fanatic, it could add some new ones to your collection. Definitely recommended for that group, and at the price this disc commands, you can't go wrong.
