    The Movies:

After Hours Cinema once again digs deep into the vaults to unleash three more no budget quickies rescued from the depths of obscurity and now presented in rough and tumble shape for your viewing pleasure on DVD. Oddly enough, the headliner is the weakest of the three pictures and the least fun, but it comes first so let's start with it…

    DADDY'S RICH:

The first film on the disc stars Carol Connors (her husband Jack Birch is credited as set director and also appears uncredited in the film as a guy in a bathhouse) and is credited as being directed by 'Marc Brock.' At any rate, the film follows a guy named Ben who has a foxy teenage daughter living at home with him. He's having the kind of thoughts a father should never have for his daughter and so he goes to see a shrink to try and get some help with the issue. One thing leads to another and the therapist decides that the best way to cure Ben is to coerce him into relieving his tension in other ways - and she's more than happy to oblige him in any way that she can. Meanwhile lots of people are screwing on white zebra print furniture which somehow leads up to an orgy that takes place in a bathhouse.

There's not much plot to this, the movie is much more concerned with sex than with story. Which is fine - this is porn, after all - and the sex is definitely prevalent and fills most of the running time (which is an unusually long ninety eight minutes in length). The problem is that it's not well shot or much more than your standard gynecological close ups over and over again. There is a lot of oral here too, and a few odd looking male cast members who sort of drag things down a bit. Not the best movie on the disc by any stretch.

    THE MAGICAL RING:

Directed by none other than Gerard Damiano in 1971, this film is pretty goofy. When it starts, a homeless man inexplicably painted up in black face approaches a beautiful woman (Tina Russell) who feels sorry for him after she sees him eating out of a garbage can. She gives him her sandwich and he in turns gives her a dollar bill which he wraps up and magically turns into a ring. For some reason, this ring turns her into a sex maniac and she sets out to get laid as often as she can.

She dresses up in lingerie and then masturbates with a giant sized dildo, and as she's lamenting the fact that it's not a real dong, pow, a magic dude appears and the two do the deed. From there she has sex with a few more people, male and female alike, before going at it with a dominatrix and then finishing up the movie with a giant gangbang. Oddly enough though, we learn before the film is over, that with great sexual power comes great sexual responsibility, or something like that. Regardless, this won't end well for our heroine.

Tina's hubby Jason Russell pops up in this as does the director himself in a non sex role as a guy hanging out in a park. Larry Hunter, who acted in a few Doris Wishman movies, is reported to be the bum in the park while it looks like Shaun Costello is the man who appears in place of the dildo early in the film. The film lacks a lot of the style and grace that Damiano's later and more polished films would show, but this is amusing enough and marginally kinky. There's a fair bit of toe sucking in here and some light rough bondage including some whip play. Tina Russell is charming enough here to carry the film and makes for an attractive and intriguing lead. This isn't in the upper echelon of Daminao films but it's interesting, occasionally sexy, and genuinely strange - all of which means it is worth a watch for those who appreciate this type of thing.

    SPECIAL ORDER:

Last but not least, this last film (also known as They're All Sluts) stars Marc Stevens as a restaurant patron who digs Carla, the cute little waitress who is taking care of him (played by Juliet Jay). He likes her so much, in fact, that he slips her a little extra cash to pay a visit to the high finance office around the corner from the restaurant where he works. She obliges him and then sort of just wanders around New York City for a while, screwing every guy who comes her way, including Sonny Landham and his pal Jack Webb who give it to her forcefully (though not convincingly so) in the back of their truck.

While all of this is going on, things are getting interesting back at Steven's office where Eric Edwards and a lovely female coworker are going over some paperwork. Carla shows up just in time for lunch and she and Stevens, who is no longer an executive but now the janitor, go at it again. They screw in the elevator and everyone is happy as things come to a close with Jay, Edwards and that other lovely lady indulging in some happy go lucky three way action.

Juliet Jay is the real star of this one. If you've seen her in Joe Sarno's Confessions Of An American Housewife then you know she's not a half bad actress at all and that she can actually be quite cute and quite charming. She's plays her character as a naí¯ve type rather than an out and out whore, and you get the impression she's having a good time going about her business as the movie plays out. The movie isn't very well put together on a technical level, it's shot fast and cheap and without much care for framing, but it lets Jay do what she does best. After Hours released this one earlier on 42nd Street Pete's Sleazy Grindhouse Picture Show, the opening credits state the director as Leo The Lion.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Each of the three movies is presented in 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen and is obviously cropped from what we can assume was the intended fullframe aspect ratio - this messed up a lot of the compositions. They were all transferred from film, but obviously the unrestored elements weren't in amazing shape. They haven't been fully restored so expect a fair bit of print damage and plenty of visible scratches but that doesn't really detract from the experience much. Colors are faded and black levels all over the place but if the elements are in rough shape, at least the disc is fairly well authored and not plagued by compression artifacts or edge enhancement problems.

The audio is on par with the video, in that it's rough but serviceable considering the origins of the films and the materials available to work with. Each of the three English language Dolby Digital Mono tracks has some hiss and some audible cracking in spots but most fans of this material won't mind so much - the exception being the third film, which sounds horrible.

Extras are limited to trailers for a few other After Hours Cinema releases, menus and feature selection. You do have the option to watch each movie on its own or via the 'Grind It' option which plays them as a grindhouse triple feature with the trailers worked in.

    The Final Word:

This is a decent entry in the Grindhouse Triple Feature line, though the cropping of the fullframe material is understandably bound to irk some fans. Magical Ring and Special Order are both quite a bit more entertaining than Daddy's Rich but the presence of Carol Connors will be enough for some to want to take notice. No extras aside from the trailers but fans of low rent seventies smut will appreciate this.
