  • Jay and Silent Bob Get Irish

    Released by: Industrial Entertainment
    Released on: 3/12/2013
    Director: Kevin Smith
    Cast: Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes
    Year: 2012
    Purchase from Amazon

    The Movie:

Anyone familiar with the podcast “Jay and Silent Bob Get Old” should know exactly what to expect with this Industrial Entertainment offering, and fans of said podcast shouldn't be disappointed with the two getting Irish. For those not familiar with the podcast, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob from a host of Kevin Smith films) talk to one another, telling stories and making really crass jokes. With this DVD, two of the shows take place in Dublin over the course of two nights, and there is a bonus show they recorded in Las Vegas.

The two seem to have some idea of what they want to yap about, as Smith has his computer in front of him, presumably with similar notes Mewes has on a notepad in front of him. Most of the talking comes from Mewes, and the stories range from his breaking a dental bridge while having sex in a Mini Cooper, to his long-time drug addiction. In fact, the reason for the podcast in the first place was to help with Mewes' sobriety. They talk freely about his addiction troubles, their penises, and just about whatever else they feel like. Make no bones about it, they say whatever they want to, no matter how crude and off-color it may be (although they avoid any racist comments, or as I like to call it “ethnic parody”). For those easily put off by talk of hard-ons and on-screen demonstrations of how Jason Mewes has sex (clothed of course), this may not be a program you will enjoy.

For those who do like that stuff, the two men are able to keep things interesting throughout the running time on all three shows. And although there may not be moments that have you in stitches, there certainly are some genuinely entertaining segments to behold. Mostly those moments involve Mewes' uninhibited pie-hole, as the man will tell you anything about himself in complete detail. Smith is good at keeping him on track and baiting Mewes into going into his verbal diarrhea, and seems to take some mischievous joy out of it.

So they are getting old, just like the rest of us. Kevin Smith's hair is far into the process of falling out, and the poor guy sweats easy under the hot lights of the stage. His hair goes from being combed over his Friar Tuck bald spot to standing up and looking pretty bad, due to his constantly wiping sweat from his face and head with a towel. Mewes' voice is shot from all the smoking and drugs he's done throughout his life, and his jaw looks like he's lost bone structure due to missing teeth (now fixed). But they don't hide these facts, and they talk about that stuff too. Whether you appreciate the humor or not, it's an admirable thing to be able to poke fun at yourself and these two do that consistently and successfully.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

The disc looks average for a DVD showing something presumably shot on digital. Nice colors, satisfying detail, and black levels that look pretty deep. Skin tones look correct and the image comes across quite clean. For audio, a 2.0 Dolby Digital track is used. Dialogue is easy to understand, and it's a non-noteworthy track. No issues with disc authoring were noticed.

Extras…a 10 minute extension of a bit they do called “Let's Fuck”, where Smith gives Mewes and an audience member a made up sexual position for the two people to act out (clothed thankfully). Mostly it's dudes who participate, but it doesn't seem to phase Mewes at all. At the beginning of each of the “Irish” shows, Mewes goes to some of the sites and makes a few comments, and it would have been interesting to see more of that, but…nope.

    The Final Word:
Die-hard fans of Smith will no doubt eat this up. Moderate fans may want to check it out on a streaming service before they plunk down the money.

      Tormented – Movie Review:

The late Bert I. Gordon’s 1963 horror film, ‘Tormented,’ is an effectively spooky ghost story made with an obviously low budget but no less effective for it.
