The Movie:
Directed by Jag Mundhra in 1996, Irresistible Impulse is the kind of movie that, if you weren't old enough to access porn, you'd stay up late to watch on cable TV because… boobs. Oh sure, there's a story here, and some acting. There are some sets, there's a score, and there are some locations. But you don't watch a movie like Irresistible Impulse or pretty much anything else Mundhra directed for those reasons, you watch them for boobs.
The story tells the sordid tale of one Richard Lovejoy (Doug Jeffrey), a real estate professional who caters to wealthy clientele on the California coast. On the surface, it would seem that Richard has it all - money, a nice house, and a beautiful wife in the form of Tina Lovejoy (Playboy Playmate Kathy Shower). But Richard has a secret… he owes a lot of money to some bad dudes because he has a gambling problem. When Tina catches him forging a check, something he's done in the past that she is really not too cool with, his relationship starts to get rocky.
Enter a rich widow named Carolyn Weatherby (Wendy MacDonald). She wants to buy some land and Richard wants to sell her some. After a bit of time together, he does just that, but no sooner have they sealed the deal then she turns up dead. Richard, being a man of few morals, decides to cash her check anyway but Carolyn's retainer, Jeaninne (LeeAnn Beaman), soon shows up… claiming that she's Carolyn Weatherby and that she wants out. It's all starting to get mysterious and dangerous, and given the fact that Richard's been sleeping with people he shouldn't be sleeping with, he'll have to use every fiber of his being to resist that… are you ready for it? Irresistible Impulse!
This thing is way too long for what it is at an hour and forty one minutes in length but even still, it's a moderately amusing slice of horribly dated sleaze. Mundhra seems to have been going for a noirish atmosphere here, throwing some femme fatales towards our far less than wholesome leading man and dumping a murder mystery and some blackmail smack dab in the middle of the plot. For the most part, it works, and when it doesn't… boobs! There's a lot of bumping and grinding in here and it definitely helps to take the focus off of the pedestrian plot and bombardment of movie clichés that the movie tosses at us.
The acting isn't great, but the actresses are usually nude or in the process of getting nude so we don't mind so much. Anytime a movie throws in a couple going at it on the beach with the waves lapping up against them, you've got to appreciate the complete disregard it shows for originality. So yeah, this is pretty hokey stuff but it is at least pretty entertaining in its hokiness.
Video/Audio/Extras:
This one looks like the straight to video movie that it is, it's presented fullframe which is how it was shot and it looks okay. Not great, but okay. It's a pretty clean image that shows okay detail and boasts pretty good color reproduction. Though it looks very much like the product of its time that it is (and is probably taken from an older video master) but the transfer is watchable enough.
The English language Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track is also of pretty good quality. Dialogue is plenty easy to understand and there are no issues with hiss or distortion to note.
Extras? Just a static menu allowing you to play the movie or watch the trailer.
The Final Word:
If you've got a soft spot for cable TV softcore movies, this will be right up your alley. It's not deep nor is it nearly as tense as it tries for, but it's entertaining enough in a goofy, superficial sort of way, and hey, dated nudity definitely counts for something.
