  • Poison Idea, Live At St. Vitus, Brooklyn, NY, August 31, 2013.

As part of an all too rare East Coast tour, Portland's Poison Idea came to Brooklyn on August 31st, 2013 for a matinee show at St. Vitus. We got there late, misdirection's wreaking havoc with our schedule, which was thankfully set right by a friendly cyclist who stopped to offer directions. Arrived just in time for Massachusetts' Dick Move opening the show, starting off their set with a Slayer-esque scream straight out of Angel Of Death before blasting through a pretty solid set and even throwing in a cover of The Circle Jerks' World Up My Ass.

Poison Idea hit the stage next, around 5pm or so (give or take a few minutes). The room got considerably more crowded. St. Vitus isn't a huge venue so the back room got pretty full. The band came out first and made a bit of noise before Jerry A. wound up on stage. He's started a little early, had been throwing back cans of Strongbow at the bar while the opening act was doing their thing and talking to anyone who wanted to say hi. The band were supposed to play the New York spot for Power Of The Riff in 2012 but that didn't happen so it was rad to see them play NYC. Pig Champion is obviously gone but the band soldiers on and you've got to give credit where credit is due, they sound tight.

Jerry was talkative between songs, admiring his drink and indulging in other things offered as well. At one point he did an Elvis Costello impersonation and kept introducing each song as 'another love song.' The band played a pretty solid mix of material, with highlights being Punish Me, Made To Be Broken and Plastic Bomb, during which the room more or less just went off. Jerry tossed the mic into the crowd a few times and stood back to let the crowd sing, and they were only too happy to oblige. Forty minutes later the set was done, over before it was really obvious that they'd just blasted through a solid dozen songs or so. A killer job from all involved, here's hoping they keep going. The world could use a new PI record and if they can keep on delivering this caliber of live performance, it'd be a shame if they didn't do just that.

From there, we had to split, another show waiting in Manhattan. Poison Idea, however, wandered over to The Cake Shop for another evening performance.

And hey, what do you know, the whole set has been uploaded to youtube!
