    The Movies:

A Kemal Horulu XXX double feature, this latest entry in their ongoing Drive-In Collection also features stalwarts Jamie Gillis, Jennifer Welles and Leslie Bovee to name just a few. Though these have hit DVD before, the quality here makes this one worthy of consideration for the old double dip, as if you've seen either of these movies before, odds are pretty good you haven't seen them look this good. Here's what you get!

    VIRGIN AND THE LOVER:

First up is 1973's Virgin And The Lover in which Eric Edwards headlines as a man named Paul. He's got some issues. He was once in love with a woman who died in a car accident and since then he's obsessed over her to a strange degree - in fact he has a mannequin that he keeps around and dresses up as his dearly departed.

He winds up at a party where he meets Lisa (Nancy Marshall), the only other guest in attendance at the event. They get it on atop a bed adorned with some amazingly tacky floral prints as she yells 'take me' and groans a lot. Was it all just a dream? From there we're treated to a four way that quickly turns into a three way scene with the inimitable Mark Stevens and two flower child types. They get it on and this segues into a scene with a bowl haired guy and a pretty brunette woman named Julie (Leah Marlon) who works as a receptionist for Paul's shrink. They screw on a nice leather couch before moving into the bedroom and hitting the plaid sheets.

From here the movie starts to tie together the two plot lines as we see Paul working away editing a film project (which allows Horulu to recycle some of Jennifer Welles' lesbian footage from Wendy's Palace). From there he goes to visit his psychiatrist to talk about his issues: he's into women's clothes a little more than most men are and then there's the whole mannequin thing, they've been coming to life and having sex with him for some time now.

Eventually he and Julie hit it off and they head out to Central Park to enjoy some quality time in a rowboat and take a horse and buggy ride, all while her boyfriend is taking picture of and getting it on with a blonde named Joyce (Olinka Podany) on the sly. Julie starts to really care about Paul though, and wants to help him get over his issues. Eventually she figures out how to do this… and as you could probably guess, it all ties back to his issues and his past.

This is a strange one to be sure. Edwards is in fine form here, he's generally miles above most adult actors and can usually be depended on to give a good performance not just in the sex department but in the dramatics department as well. The guy can act. He seems to be having fun with this one, not taking things any more seriously than he needs to and quite aware of how goofy all of this is. The rest of the cast are also fine, the sex is well shot and pretty enthusiastic, the ladies generally looking quite good here.

We get some nice early seventies New York City location footage, not just in the Central Park clips (at one point we get to see Edwards feeding squirrels!) but some grimier Manhattan locations too. This helps give the movie some nice atmosphere. It's a pretty entertaining hour and half with some effectively bizarre sequences (the mannequins are strange) and a solid cast doing fine work.

    LUSTFUL FEELINGS:

The second feature tells the sordid tale of Tony (Jamie Gillis), a New York City based drug dealer how is in a bit of hot water with Mr. Canucci (Ras Kean), a loan shark to whom he owes some money. It seems that Tony isn't making the payments on time and Canucci isn't particularly happy about this. Canucci is able to come up with an amiable solution, however, when he suggest that Tony's lady friend, Joanna (Leslie Bovee), do some for a photographer friend of his named Claudette (Eva Henderson).

Tony goes home and bones Joanna and after that, Joanna meets up with Claudette, who has some strange pseudo-European accent, and she shows off her body for her. Meanwhile, a woman (Terri Hall) who wants to buy some cocaine off of Tony gets all turned on and has lesbian sex with her partner (Helen Madigan). Tony shows up in time to make the delivery but surprisingly doesn't join in. He does, however, get it on with his neighbor Sharon (Nancy Dare) to the soothing sounds of some instrumental music heavy on relaxing strings.

By this point in time, Claudette has convinced Joanna that the real money isn't in picture but in turning tricks. The two of them head to the house of a man (R. Bolla) who pays them to have sex while he watches but after a bit of that they coerce him into participating. They wander through Central Park and talk and when Joanna heads home she has sex with Tony while some cool sitar music plays. After that though, it's back to work - Joanna visits Canucci, has a drink with him and then doing a strip tease for him before they put on a record and screw. From there she goes to visit her next client (Hershel Savage) where she's decked out in leather and chained to a white brick wall with some shackles. He's got a leather mask and whip and isn't afraid to use it. It's a short scene though.

As the movie comes to a close, it turns out that Joanna hasn't been giving Tony the money he wants. She tells him she wanted him to work and he calls her a 'fucking dumb whore' because Canucci has been putting some heat on him. The fight and she tells him she's got to be allowed to be herself, accusing him of not caring. She wants her freedom and when she tells him she enjoys whoring and won't give it up, their relationship is obviously starting to crack.

Tony responds in kind by heading back to his the apartment of the coke buyer we saw earlier (Terri Hall). They have sex very briefly, while Joanna moves on to her next trick (Bobby Astyr). They screw while two black guys watch. They have an orgy and drink and screw and do some blow and it's starting to look like Joanna has hit rock bottom. Tony, meanwhile, has to meet Canucci in Central Park to settle things once and for all.

The first movie was good, this second movie is better. The acting is strong all around, Gillis makes a great sleazy drug dealer and Ras Kean is pretty decent as the mobster type. The real start of the show here, however, is lovely Leslie Bovee. She does a decent job with the line delivery and shows she wasn't a half bad actress at all but she smolders in the sex scenes and is in quite a lot of them. The rest of the cast here are good as well and the scene between Hall and Madigan is definitely a highlight. Throw in noticeably better than usual production values for a Horulu film, a good score and more nice New York City location photography and this one turns out to be a pleasant surprise, a sexy, engaging and well made picture.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Both movies are presented in 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen transferred from 35mm elements and for the most part both movies look very good here, scanned in 2k from the original 35mm camera negatives. Detail is very good and colors look excellent. There are a few scenes in both movies where the lighting is a little less than perfect but ultimately what we wind up with are some nice, film-like transfers taken from materials that were culled from elements that appear to have been in great condition, these are pretty much pristine presentations.

Both films get Dolby Digital Mono soundtracks, in English and without any optional language options or subtitles provided. Clarity of each mix is fine. There are some scenes that sound a bit flat but that's obviously to do with the original recording. The scores sound good here and the levels are properly balanced. Any hiss or distortion that does creep into the mix is minor and not particularly distracting while the dialogue is consistently easy to understand and follow.

Aside from a static menu offering chapter selection, there are theatrical trailers included for each one of the movies on the disc.

    The Final Word:

Another great entry in Vinegar Syndrome's ongoing Drive-In Collection line up, this release of Virgin And The Lover/Lustful Feelings offers up two better than average adult feature in fantastic condition. Lustful Feelings is the real gem here but both pictures are quite well made and feature some name talent at the top of their game.
