  • Resident Alien - The Suicide Blonde

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: November 13, 2013

An alien is stranded on Earth, awaiting rescue from his homeworld that's a long time in coming. So he assumes the identity of Dr. Harry Vanderspiegle, doctor in a small city. He's got the ability to mask his true appearance to the surrounding humans and is soon the confidante of both the mayor and the sheriff in the city.

This issue focuses primarily on Harry's involvement with the case of a murdered girl and the accused killer, Karen, whom Harry knows and believes to be innocent of the charges. Karen relates her story of falling in love with the other girl, Shannon, over time and then, over a confrontation and accusations of infidelity, Shannon quickly takes an arsenic pill and dies. Karen tries to cover up the suicide since she believes everyone will think her a murderer. But Harry convinces her to surrender to the police willingly even though her chances at being found innocent are fairly slim.

So after he leaves Karen with the police, Harry and his gal pal walk through a park where he unknowingly appears in the background of the picture taken by some other folks there in the park. Harry then talks with the sheriff about Karen's case and then, later, with the mayor who was apparently involved as he as paying Shannon to be an escort for him when she was confronted by Karen. This story ends, though, with that photograph coming to light as the camera was able to pick up Harry's true form and gets put online, instantly going viral - much to the delight/chagrin of nefarious-looking men in black suits…

The story here by Peter Hogan is so formulaic and cut-and-dried, with the real story being Harry's true identity, that this just feels like you're slogging through it to get to the good stuff. And artist Steve Parkhouse's style is so bland that it doesn't help liven up that narrative much at all. Some promising elements enter the story at the very end in the cliffhanger but getting there is way too much of a chore.
