  • S.H.O.O.T. First #2

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: November 13, 2013

Yes, Virginia - there is such a thing as trying way too hard. The S.H.O.O.T. series seems to be doing just that, at least in this episode, and everything suffers as a result.

The Secular Humanist Occult Obliteration Taskforce is a team dedicated to saving the world by fighting supernatural creatures called Outside Actors who are on Earth to harvest the faith of humans. So, naturally, the only defense is to have “no faith” and not to believe in any god or gods at all.

At its premise it's interesting but that promise quickly loses out to sloppy, muddled execution, cliched writing from Justin Aclin and pretty flat and uninspiring artwork from Nicolas Daniel Selma. This entry deals with new S.H.O.O.T. team member Infidel, an ex-Muslim who's still coming to terms with his new status. Apparently, though, a lack of (religious) faith is necessary as all of S.H.O.O.T.'s weaponry is keyed into that mental component. Infidel is a little conflicted, even after encountering broad stereotypes and engaging in some very hackneyed dialog. But will their leader hide his own conflicting thoughts and sell them all out to the Pope? Will team leader Brookstone be able to hide her half-Outside Actor son from her own employers? Will any of this make any sense any time soon?

Seriously, the theology here sounds like it came from either 5th-graders or very stoned college freshmen. It's pretty trite but at least it all moves along quickly - it's just a shame it can't live up to its premise.
