  • Abe Sapien #7

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: November 13, 2013

Dovetailing well with the B.P.R.D. line the solo adventures of Abe Sapien add another welcome layer to this diverse universe.

In this issue, Abe is traveling through the Arizona desert with an older Hispanic couple. As they drive through the not-so-barren desert they discuss the various creation versions of the world and, ultimately, what's behind the Mayan apocalypse.

Meanwhile, a zombie-like creature approaches a guard post comprised of volunteers dedicated to protecting Phoenix from any invasion - whatever that might mean. Their encounter with the zombie ends badly, though, and Abe telepathically picks up on it as they've stopped for water in the neighboring desert. Soon after, enormous bug-like creatures emerge and purse Abe and his companions who, in their escape, run right into the guards who don't take to kindly to this intrusion. All hell breaks loose with both parties losing members in the ensuing firefight. Abe is nearly done in by these reactionaries, too, but is saved at the last thanks to his connection to the animals of this world.

The stark environment - very well rendered by artist Sebastian Fiumara and colorist Dave Stewart - provides a solid “post-apocalyptic” type of backdrop for the unfolding of these tumultuous events. Creator-Writer Mike Mignola and co-writer Scott Allie are very comfortable here, providing Abe with some space to ponder his own involvement with not only the B.P.R.D. but humanity in general. His more peaceful nature is called immediately into question during this story and then humanity turn on him after he's rescued them. It's a solid setup to the rest of this action-based series, potentially, promising some good entertainment.
