  • #1 for $1 - Abe Sapien: Dark and Terrible, Part 1 of 3

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: November 27, 2013

More troubles follow B.P.R.D. agent Abe Sapien as he attempts to find his own way while the world around him is quickly disintegrating. In this issue, he's still on the run, trying to find more of his own identity rather than partake in the seemingly non-stop fighting of his former employers.

Monsters of all types are coming forth all over the U.S. and, at a B.P.R.D. team meeting, it's clear that they're just playing catch-up, unable to get ahead of the menace. Since most of their non-human agents are apparently dead or M.I.A. the humans at this meeting are hoping that Abe can be found and convinced to assist them. His unique character has allowed him special experiences that can - they hope - provide insights into the larger picture and give their forces the edge they need.

Meanwhile, a summoner is attempting to draw Satan forth into the corpse of a dead little girl but, like most things in the world now, it's just not going to plan. Abe, then, for his part, travels in disguise as best he's able, here listening in on a group of hoboes in a traincar. While they may not get their facts right - “Vampires are mushrooms!” raves one of their number - they are able to relate the scattered tales of monster activity that gives Abe some useful information. That is, until the train comes to a halt and the B.P.R.D. show up, forcing Abe to flee yet again…

Writers Mike Mignola and Scott Allie are veterans of this character and universe and so they're able to get the story and action moving quickly. They build a compelling sense of dread in this new world and focus discreetly but effectively on Abe as the potential key to it all. The artwork from Sebastian Fiumara is consistent with his other body of work with this character, deftly capturing the grand scale of the war at hand while also relating the proper emotional quality of the humans and non-humans involved to better relate what's really at stake here.

A great introduction to a new series for a great character they keep finding new ways to explore.
