  • Mind Mgmt #17

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: November 27, 2013

Having not read any other issues of this series, dropping in on this latest issue of Mind Mgmt seems a bit jarring. But, from just this brief exposure, I'd say that effect is precisely what's on writer-artist Matt Kindt's mind.

The story here begins discussing “curlers,” specialized agents whose power is that of overwhelming suggestion. Their goal, then, is specific, intentional disruption of society. It then cuts to Megan, a sleeper agent integrated into society, bent on now destroying her entire neighborhood. Some people show up to help her but, as she details to them, they have no idea who she is or what she's capable of.

What follows is a description of Megan's training and then [SPOILERS] how she has single-handedly orchestrated the destruction of this button-down neighborhood she's been living in as a housewife for a number of years. Amidst this chaos, other agents appear, revealing the tensions around the nature of Mind Mgmt and the warring factions trying to settle it all, once and for all.

Kindt's storytelling technique here is a bit stream-of-consciousness but that doesn't mean it's disjointed - not at all. Everything feels very intentional, very measured and purposeful. His artwork, too, matches the chaos of the story well, even utilizing the margins of the page for extra narrative effect.

Dizzying, dream-like but brutal and unrelenting this episode of Mind Mgmt is absolutely worth checking out.
