  • Abe Sapien #8

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: December 11, 2013

This latest Abe Sapien story is meant as a one-shot, with the title of Land of the Dead, tying the character's on-going series to broader events. As the story opens, Abe is at B.P.R.D. headquarters, explaining his most recent adventures in Mexico to Prof. Bruttenholm. Apparently, it's thought that the entrance to the Mayan underworld of Xibalba has been discovered and - as it's mostly submerged - Abe's sent in to investigate.

Other divers have gone into the dark waters but not returned so Abe's on full alert. So he's not too surprised when some beast attacks him in the water as he navigates the many caverns. But, soon, he finds the missing divers and one is still alive - terrified and insane but still alive. Examining the corpses of the other divers Abe soon figures out that vampires are at work here and he sets out to finish them off.

He eventually finds them and has to dispatch them after they attack, leaving Abe and the Professor to ponder what their story actually was (why were Prussian soldiers there?). But, perhaps more ominously and opening the door for more stories, where are the other vampires?

Mike Mignola teams again with Scott Allie to continue to flesh out the rich world he's created and this one-shot is yet another great addition. Michael Avon Oeming's artwork is near-identical to Mignola's so the visual look is remarkably consistent here as well (even Dave Stewart's colors are spot-on).

This one-shot is a solid parallel story to the current Abe Sapien series and, if you're into that, then you'll definitely want in on this as well.
