  • Clown Fatale #2

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: December 11, 2013

The gals - Chloe, Aya, Tina and Candy - now have a “proof kill” under their belts and while they're not full-fledged assassins (yet) they are willing to follow this path to escape their circus lives.

Now, the gals are meeting with the local crime boss in an attempt to secure payment and their next job. Instead, they get half of their payment and decide to live it up a little as way of celebrating in a manner they haven't been able to enjoy in a long time. But while the others revel, de facto group leader Chloe has some moral misgivings about this path, providing at least some level of consciousness amongst the group.

Their revelries in the bar cut short by misogyny the gals head back to the circus. But their return isn't a welcome one as the Russian knife-throwers - those who were supposed to have received the assignment that was mistakenly given to the clowns - are ready to pounce. The gals are dragged into a meeting with the circus owner who berates their absence, verbally abusing them and acting more like their pimp than just an employer. This is too much for the buxom redhead Candy who shoots him in the chest.

Stuck now with a dying body to dispose of, the gals decide to head to the animal cages. Mongo the gorilla seems like a good choice but they throw the circus manager to the lions instead who are only too happy to make the end of their oppressor. But just as they've jumped out of one fire, the Russians show up and shockingly reduce their number by one. The gals are clearly out-classed here and certain of their fate when, suddenly, the quiet, crazy Aya comes to life and is apparently quite the formidable foe. The ensuing fight is bloody, brutal and fairly entertaining.

Born of blood and enraged at the loss of one of their own, the remaining gals tear off to finish the contract that started them down this path, taking out a local drug dealer and his gang with a complete lack of subtlety, ferocious grins painted across their faces.

Initially a rather poor attempt at capturing a certain level of Russ Meyer-esque sexploitation this second issue raises the stakes a bit more and pushes the characters forward nicely. The artwork from Mauricio Rosenzweig is more mannered here, focusing less on T&A and more so on the action as that takes center stage here. The story by Victor Gischler doesn't dwell too long on any one area but imparts enough pathos and compassion to move the characters beyond sexual archetypes well enough.

I wasn't that big a fan of the first issue but this second entry of Clown Fatale has me back on board, for certain.
