  • Star Wars #12

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: December 11, 2013

The New Hope saga continues here, in a story titled Leia's Decision. Having dispatched the Imperial star destroyer Devastator the rebels are able to take some time to regroup. The double-agent responsible for disabling that Imperial ship turns out to be Kell Bircher who had been in charge of pursuing the rebels but turned to their cause.

Leia, however, mistrusts Mon Mothma's plan and Bircher even less. She doesn't like plans where the rebel pilots are put into danger without knowing why. She breaks the news to them and then takes Luke and Wedge with her to a briefing with Mothma and Bircher. The double-agent wins over Wedge's trust and, since he's now in charge of the rebel pilots, he's able to go back to them with at least some useful orders.

Leia is still upset but more so at herself at letting her team down. She confides to Luke that she's leaving the squad, heading back for more “mercy missions” and to do more work on the ground for the rebellion. Meanwhile, Han has returned with fellow smuggler Perla and the two have obvious chemistry which Han's only too happy to exploit, especially to make Leia jealous (which it does).

Leia has been trying to find a new home-base world for them all and has succeeded through a version of diplomacy: the planet of Arrochar will welcome them if she will consent to become it's ruling prince's bride which she does, putting her own ambitions aside for the sake of the greater good. Luke and Han grumble a bit about this, with Luke confiding a bit more about it to R2-D2 and mentioning that he's feeling his connection to The Force slipping. All this time, though, Vader is shown making certain preparations of his own…

Emotional and character-driven this story really fills in nicely on the elements between the big film stories. Brian Wood's script is well-suited to the Star Wars universe and he's also able to rely on earlier versions of these well-known characters and give them compelling, interesting stories that only serve to shore up their later actions. Carlos D'Anda's art is richly detailed and fits the various Star Wars series from Dark Horse quite capably as well.
