  • Criminal Macabre: The Eyes of Frankenstein #3

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: November 27, 2013

Cal McDonald is a ghoul who's undergoing some strange changes that are apparently rendering him near-invincible. He's also got a dour view of the world and is quick with the wisecrack. Together with his ghoul-like buddy, Mo'Lock, they seek to battle the truly nasty monsters of the world.

In this issue, Cal and Mo'Lock are trying to harvest new eyes for Adam, a Frankenstein-like monster who's losing his eyesight. Adam is at the offices of Dr. Hemlock, a “known occultist” but concerned with the struggle he sees as the ghoul population is nearing mass extinction due to unknown causes. Cal and Mo'Lock are locked in a struggle with some large monster when Cal suddenly alters his appearance and abilities, much to his surprise, but dispatches the baddie.

Meanwhile, Det. Lou Wheatley is investigating the remains of some bloody ritual in a mysterious house. His only lead is to Hemlock who's apparently housing Wheatley's ex-, Doris, and her kids. Wheatley shows up at Hemlock's place while the doctor is administering to both Adam's new eyes and trying to find the reason why a ghoul like Cal is getting stronger but the rest of their kind are getting weaker. To best determine what's happening to Cal the doctor decides a supernatural ritual is necessary to their path of discovery. But will Cal survive, especially with Wheatley beating down the door to the place?

A gritty mixture of crime drama, classic horror and a touch of Lovecraft, the world created by author Steve Niles and excellently illustrated by Christopher Mitten is a fun and compelling take on what you'd think was a pretty familiar world. Smart and quick-moving, this series is clearly having a ball, ensconced in the horror genre but not trapped there.
