  • Halo: Escalation #1

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: December 11, 2013

You've played the game, now read the comic? A seemingly hurried after-thought this new series in the Halo universe does little to entertain or occupy.

Commander Sarah Palmer is a Spartan soldier and her rugged squad are assigned to protect a special meeting - one that involves the high command and the leader of The Covenant, The Arbiter. Fresh on the heels of the storyline involving Requiem (Halo 4 game) everyone in the Halo universe is concerned over the Forerunners and their plans of destruction. But their meeting is attacked, seemingly by a disgruntled, hyper-religious Covenant faction. Cut off from their mothership and reinforcements, Palmer and her squad take the survivors to a remote location, hoping to hold off the inevitable waves of incoming aggressors.

Basically, this whole thing reads like a fairly uninspired level in a Halo game - only rather than playing through it and skipping the cliched cut-scenes you get to read through it all. A boring and juvenile script from Chris Schlerf is somehow actually hindered by inconsistent, glaring artwork by Sergio Arino. Even a classy cover from Anthony Palumbo can't help this one. Messy, lacking originality, and uninspiring this is a series you can afford to skip. Unless you need to buy some comics for your eight-year-old nephew or niece. It is Christmas time, after all, right?
