  • The Walking Dead #118

    Released by: Image Comics
    Released on: December 11, 2013

This story is the fourth in a 12-part series called All-Out War. Rick is leading the charge against the outposts of The Saviors, led by the maniacal Negan, who apparently wants control of The Kingdom, the community that Rick and his group have settled in with.

At the story's open, one survivor - the long-time leader of The Kingdom - returns with part of Rick's attack group, having abandoned that plan. Some think that Negan can be reasoned with but, as Maggie is quickly and passionately able to point out, that's going to lead to a lifetime of slavery. Meanwhile, Michonne returns with some more hopeful news of the attack for Carl who continue in their strong relationship of trusting respect.

The story then shifts to a battle narrative as one survivor of the attacking group saw it all falling apart and fled. Negan's forces almost capture him but the quickly-turning recently deceased become a bigger problem for them. Fleeing, he's soon beset by more of the undead, saved only at the end by his huge, magnificent tiger, Shiva. He escapes back to The Kingdom, ashamed and embarassed.

Some familiar characters and crisp writing move this story along nicely. Series creator Robert Kirkman delves into the familiar (humans fighting against other humans AND the undead) but still manages to make it sing, with brisk action sequences and minimal but potent dialog scenes. Pencils from Charlie Adlard continue the familiar style of the series with some quite huge panels dominating the story here.

Excellent writing with compelling storylines and detailed characters are the hallmark of The Walking Dead and this latest installment of All Out War is no exception. Very well worth the investment.
