The third issue of the new Samurai Jack series written by Jim Zub with artwork by the original Samurai Jack character designer Andy Suriano understandably picks up where the second issue left off. Jack is on a quest to find the various threads of time that he needs to get back to his time. Having just defeated a pair of twin combatants named Dis and Dat, he's got a thread that is guiding him towards the others left by his enemy, Aku, which lead him to what appears to be ancient Greece where he meets Gloer The Great, guardian of the village of Grantus.
Glower shows Jack around town and offers him their hospitality and soon it comes out that the villagers are forbidden to interact with strangers. Jack and Gloer share a meal, then spar, after which Jack explains to him the intent of his mission. Gloer denies knowing of any strand and the humorously changes the subject to get Jack's mind wandering to other topics. But soon it's time for action when Aku's robot drones attack Grantus. Jack leads into action but is soon outnumbered…
Once again the Samurai Jack creative times finds that right balance of humor, action and suspense, this time even working in some fittingly Greek style tragedy to give this issues its own flavor. Zub's dialogue does a great job of continuing to evolve the character from what was established in the TV series years back, Jack remains noble and fair as he should, but so too does he remain determined to do what he needs to do. There's enough dialogue here to build character but it's not so worry as to bog things down. As such, the book is an easy, fun read.
Suriano's artwork remains pretty much perfect, very much in the same style as the show which is important given its fantastic visual style and its dedicated (some might say obsessive, and that's okay too!) fan base. Samurai Jack needs to look like Samurai Jack, and thankfully it does. The character designs are great, and the panel lay out in this issue is creative and visually appealing. Great use of color here too, and a few really keen action scenes that are laid out in interesting ways, the scene where Jack fights the drones being the best example. All in all, a great issue with a surprisingly touching ending and another fine addition to the series.
