  • Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight #4

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: Jan. 01, 2014
    Writer: Alex De Campi
    Artist: Simon Fraser
    Cover: Dan Panosian

The conclusion to a two-part story that takes issues #3 and #4 to tell, “Prison Ship Antares” brings an end to the story of an exploratory spaceship bound for a planet that's a five-year trip away. The ship is filled with “volunteers”, meaning buxom and lonely female prison inmates. Keeping with the tried-and-effective formula that forms the beloved “Women In Prison” movie genre, the ladies are under the control of a sadistic warden, are held under brutal conditions, and faced with awful punishments for straying too far from the path of obedience. In part one they discuss their plan of escape (or mutiny really), and in part two the big bull-dyke bust-out ensues.

Of course the prison suits they are forced to wear are just too much in the way once the rioting begins, so off they come. Female fighting makes more sense with no clothes on, as everyone clearly knows. The vast majority of the issue plays out the riot/overthrow complete with tons of carnage, boobs, nipples, and bad language. It's definitely not for the kiddies.

As with issue #3, Alex De Campi writes a tale that adheres to the formula used by pretty much every Women In Prison show and she does a sweet job bringing that to the comic book world while giving it a sci-fi angle. It's pretty much exactly what you would expect if you are familiar with the material to which she's paying tribute and she stays faithful to the rules. It's sleazy, violent, and a fucking blast to read. The one complaint is that it was too fast of a read. But, too much of a good thing…blah blah blah.

Simon Fraser is the artist on this 2-issue arc, and his pencils give De Campi's sleaziness that much more zest. He's not afraid to go for the jugular regarding the blood and guts and he draws nice boobs. Although this isn't at all for kids, the sleaze for the most part stay's PG-13. No full frontal, but we do see boobs. Were the boobs mentioned already? Well there are many in this comic. The cover this time around is by comic veteran Dan Panosian, but there really isn't much to the piece. The cover on this one does not at all represent the insides. It would be great to see video box-styled covers, like the extra pin-up page in issue #3 for “Werewolf In Heat”. At any rate, a great job by the creative team and worth checking out, especially if you dig crappy movies.
