Elisa is ghost, a character trapped between the worlds of humans and demons. Unfortunately, she can't remember much of her past before she became Ghost - but that doesn't stop her from hunting down demons that have possessed regular humans.
She's joined in her mission by Tommy and Vaughn, reporters of sorts intent on telling Ghost's side of the story. Tommy's girlfriend Sloane helps them out, too, managing the social network side of the urban legends growing around Ghost.
The police are doubtful on the accuracy of eyewitness accounts of Ghost, choosing instead to pair up her activity with what the local press have termed as the “White City Butcher,†a serial killer making a general mess of things. Meanwhile, Elisa is busy in her human form, trying to track down more info on the life of the human host she most recently helped out, someone named Barrow who seemed to recognize her.
Not having her memories intact beyond an old diary she's trying to piece a great deal of stories back together. But a chance encounter with another human-possessing demon provides an opportunity to find out more behind what happened to her, what the bigger picture is and how she might have a way out. She just has to make a deal with a demon first…
Crisply written dialog aids a story with a great deal of moving pieces here. Kelly Sue DeConnick brings a certain grounded reality to Elisa/Ghost that's refreshing for a superhero comic. The characters aren't always brooding or angry or firing off one-liners - here, they have quiet moments of doubt and self-reflection that we all share. And the artwork from Ryan Sook bolsters the script quite excellently, never losing detail but easily relaying the action as well. A very good start to what looks to be a great series.
