  • Kiss Me Satan #5

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Release on: January 15, 2014

For the final issue in this fun series, writer Victor Gischler finally lets us see Barnabas Black for who he truly is.

The story kind of oddly starts with Zell trying to pray for some kind of help in a church - where's she's immediately flagged and attacked by a gun-wielding priest and nun. Black and the witch Zell storm the house of the Cassian Steele and his werewolf mafia, looking to save the his child of some kind of destiny. Not all is well in the house, though, as Mrs. Steele is being kept sedated and out of the way since she doesn't like what her hubby's up to…

Things start to get crazy as one of them opens up with a mini-gun. But then Zell throws a spell to temporarily freeze time which allows she and Black time to plan, where she'll get the kid to safety and he'll basically prevent anyone from following her. Their last moment together is brief but touching as they know now this is the way things have to be and, for the success of the mission, they won't be able to see each other on the other side of it, either. Zell manages to locate the kid but is confronted by Cassian. However, just as he's about to kill her, Mrs. Steele decides to put an end to him once and for all...

Black takes out the one with the mini-gun then approaches the pack surrounding the evil mage Malcolm. Their fight is short-lived and Black is subdued, giving Malcolm the opportunity to take Black's amulet. He thinks this is the key to his power but, as Black is about to show him, it's not something that gives him powers but, rather, something that keeps Black's true nature in check. Now unfettered he's able to bloodily dispatch Malcolm and pretty much everything else around him. Black then awakes some time later, by a lake in the woods, his wise-cracking cherubim giving him the lowdown on the success of their mission.

A satisfying, fun, gore-filled conclusion to this series and well worth checking out.
