Last issue, Conan had Devi Yasmina taken from him by the Master of Yimsha and he has some horrid plans for her. The Cimmereian teamed up with the Wazulis clan to get her back, as they want her as well as Conan does, and after they defeat their mutual enemy they can hash it out between them.

In the conclusion to this Robert E. Howard adaptation, Conan figures out how to get down into the hiding place of the wizards, led by the Master of Yimsha. With his soon-to-be foes at his back, they descend into the pit to meet the acolytes of the Master, and the acolytes meet Conan's blade. The good guys figure out that the secret to the place, and the shell of crystal that has formed over the underground castle, has to do with a giant crystal egg with something floating in it. Smashing the crystal egg just makes the Master pissed off even more, causing him to turn into a giant snake and he goes after Yasmina. Uh-uh, Conan says no to that. Then he says no again when a giant vulture tries to take her. Connection? Yes. But when all is said and done, what of Conan and Yasmina?

Man, this four-issue run from Fred Van Lente and Ariel Olivetti is fantastic. It's a Conan story at its purest, and exactly what we want out of our barbarian from start to finish. You may know the story from a different adaptation done by Marvel Comics years and years ago, but who cares? Conan done right is Conan done awesome. As always, he's sexist, egomaniacal, and the most confident man ever to wield iron. Van Lente's script is faithful to the Howard story and his dialogue flows really well, but its Olivetti's paintings that make this book such a winner. He makes Conan larger than life and gives him a menacing edge, not to mention that great haircut (you know the one, straight across bangs, long hair all over).

One can only hope (pray?) that the powers that be at Dark Horse will one day work with Olivetti again on Conan material. At the very least have some covers done. The insides are just as gorgeous as the covers, issue four being no exception, but the covers sell the books for this reader. There would be no hesitation to pick up any comic Ariel Olivetti lends his paints to, especially when it comes to a Conan book.
