  • Abe Sapien #10

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Release on: January 22, 2014

This story is part 2 of 3 in the series To the Last Man. Abe has just saved a small town in Arizona with an improvised napalm bomb and the survivors are counting the lucky stars. However, to move the story forward, a new threat is introduced, one that feels forced but is consistent with the modus operandi of Abe and the world he inhabits.

A new, creepy bad guy gets introduced, another old soul who has a slave with him. As they prepare for some other coming calamity, the slave tries to escape, only to have a nasty pet creature of this bad guy hop out of his chest. Meanwhile, Abe and the local town sheriff prattle on about their backgrounds during all this fighting, the sheriff having apparently lost his son in Afghanistan and Abe thinking about Fenix, the agent that shot him down. They get drunk together (Abe's still an infamous lightweight) and Abe finally passes out in his hotel room.

At the same time, across town, though, a new menace has raised some pretty awful zombies and they start their feeding, and with a couple people missing from the town, the sheriff gets involved. But he doesn't want the kind of trouble that Abe brings befalling his town again and angrily sends Abe away. He's also reluctant to give notice on some shifty kids out on the edge of town but, while he's defending his decision to do nothing about them, some bad juju rituals are going down that are sure to come to a head. Looks like he's gonna need Abe's special troubled brand of help after all…

Scott Allie keeps the story moving a bit though the new menaces do seem to pile on and step over each other a bit. He mentions at the end of the issue that he'd recently re-read Salem's Lot and the similarities are plentiful if not exactly clear. But it's still fairly entertaining stuff here and Max Fiumara's artwork is still top-notch.
