  • Star Wars - Dawn of the Jedi: Force War #3

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Release on: January 15, 2014

The evil Rakata have captured Je'daii generals Xesh and Daegen Lok, thanks to the turncoat Trill. The leader, predor Skal'nas, ultimately unlocks Xesh's memory so that he sees the predor's plan from the beginning: Xesh's memory was blocked and falsified, being a spy for the Rakata all along. Xesh tries to fight that, now, seeing that there is a light side to the Force as well but he cannot maintain that belief. So he and the predor torture Lok, to see what it is exactly he found in the chasms of Tython...

Meanwhile, Je'daii ranger Shae Koda and the others press the fight against the flesh raiders, using Xesh's instructions on the Dark Side to power their forcesabers and gain the upper hand in the fight. But she still has feelings for Xesh even though through their seers they soon discover what he's up to. Xesh even manages to blind all their seers and cut them off from the Force. Thus empowered, the battle turns the way of the Rakatans and the Je'daii are forced to flee.

Lok's torture reveals that he has discovered the fabled prime Infinity Gate of Kwa. They find that the gate is on Tython, at Anil Kesh, the home of the Je'daii. So all the major players are coming together in the same place, at the same time, but who is ultimately on whose side?

John Ostrander does an excellent job providing exposition and motivation for his characters while also combining action and a little romance into the mix. The universe is somewhat familiar but given this storyline's ancient setting it could be ovewhelming for anyone not as adept a writer as the long-time vet. He's also aided here with the outstanding artwork of Jan Duursema - really, each panel is just plain gorgeous here and, with the intensity growing in the story, scenes are only going to get bigger. A fantastic combination for telling this unique story.
