Lily and Julien are travelling the French countryside during the Nazi occupation. Posing as wine connoisseurs they are stopped at a German checkpoint and, at this point, it seems that Julien is the one most in command of the situation. He's fluent in German, handsome and personable as he talks to the guards and, eventually, through the checkpoint. Lily is a nervous mess but she trusts Julien enough to make it through as well.

Soon, they reach their destination and it's Lily's turn to be the one in control. She enters a hotel, her delicate gloved hands holding a silenced pistol. She's soon in a firefight with her target, an old German sniper that escapes but not before she wounds him. They give chase and disable his car, leaving them both on foot to finish what she started. It's her turn, then, to calm down her partner, remaining focused and steady for her deadly deed.

During the entirety of the story, though, Lily thinks of her father, of dreams of him, of the peace his image offers - and of the storm outside their lives, threatening to take them all away. She thinks, too, about her mother and how she handled her death when Lily was only five. It's this narrative that gives this story its emotional punch and makes her more than just an assassin.

Kurtis Wiebe's script is tight and fast-moving but with a fluid grace to it that's very appropriate. Tyler Jenkins' artwork works exceptionally well with shadow and lines, setting the mood while also defining the nature of the French resistance in their occupied country. Gripping and visceral, this is a series well worth checking out.
