Savage Dragon #193
Released by: Image Comics Ltd.
Released on: February 19, 2014
“1st Issue in a Bold, New Direction!†the cover promises and, for this older series, it delivers it not so much as a reboot but an update. The iconic Green Dragon has a son named Malcolm and after dad gets thrown in prison and stripped of his superpowers the torch passes to the son.
Malcolm, though, is just trying to fit in as much as a big monster with a fin on his head can. He's going to a new school, trying to explain about his “sorta†girlfriend, and just trying to get along. But he's also still on the police department's speed-dial and, soon, he's fighting a huge beastie called Tantrum who's wreaking havoc. One massive property-damaging fight later, Malcolm is victorious, having shown off what all he can do.
He next visits his dad in prison and while they don't discuss the details of what got him in there in the first place they do look hopefully toward the future together.
An interesting update for a long-running character, Erik Larsen's script is playful enough while keeping to the same spirit of the original series. The same can be said for his artwork, which feels totally in line with the old issues.Posting comments is disabled.
