  • Tomb Raider #1

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: February 26, 2014

Another month, another video game tie-in series from DH, this time coming on the heels of the reboot of the long-running Tomb Raider series and the 2013 game.

Set immediately after the events of that game conclude the story focuses on a younger Lara Croft as she relies on luck and strength to get out of one bad situation after another. She's plagued by nightmares from the shipwreck and ensuing events that were the basis for that game. And she knows her few fellow survivors are, too, so she jumps to respond when one of those folks calls her in a panic, requesting her assistance immediately.

She's then off to the middle of a barren desert, to see what she can do for her friend, Jonah. She's confused, though, as to why the coast-loving Maori would choose to live in such a desolate, arid place. But, as soon as she finds him, she can see that all is not right with Jonah as he rambles on about guardians and a figure named Ka that followed all of them back from that frightful island. As she's trying to talk him down, though, a huge tidal wave appears out of nowhere, washing them all away. While Lara reaches safety Jonah tells her to beware before he meets his own demise, leaving her even more puzzled and overwhelmed than before.

The script and story from Gail Simone are functional but very much have the feeling of another video game - which is great, I suppose, if that's what they were going for. But between it and the pedestrian artwork from Nicolas Daniel Selma this story just doesn't inspire me to dig any deeper, feeling more like a cash-in than an earnest effort to explore this character and go in any new direction.
