  • Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #2

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: February 26, 2014

    “You can't stop the signal…”

Nor, it seems, the crew of Firefly-class vessel, Serenity. Set after the events of the 2005 film original series contributor Zack Whedon continues the tale of the surviving characters. Zoe has had her baby but there are complications, forcing the crew to get her to proper medical facilities. But the Alliance is still quite interested in locating them, even moreso now that the little crew managed to reveal a big ol' dirty secret the Alliance didn't want broadcast.

Knowing the risks, Mal and Simon take Zoe aboard a medical facility and, naturally, Mal's soon ID'd and troops are en route to capture them. He can't stand it but, if they don't leave Zoe, she'll die aboard Serenity. So they soon escape, leaving Zoe to an uncertain fate.

Jayne has since left the crew, not wanting to hide away, choosing to take his chances in the big-ness of space. But he's soon approached by a motivated individual named Bea that's part of the “New Resistance” that really wants Malcolm Reynolds on their side. She has her own ship and crew and has hired Jayne to locate his old partner.

Aboard the Serenity, Mal isn't feeling very good about the state of things, knowing that Zoe is now lost. But new pilot River has a suggestion: To trade the Alliance the remaining secrets locked away in her brain, whatever they may be, for Zoe's life. Nobody likes it but she has her brother Simon put her into a coma so she can do just that. Immediately after doing that, though, Jayne and his new employers show up.

Mal suspects that they were followed but Bea and Jayne swear they weren't. However, an old nemesis known as Mr. Early shows up and, after dispatching Bea's crew and ship, sets his sights on Serenity and, in particular, the vulnerable River with whom he has an old score…

Having Whedon's control on this storyline gives everything here the feeling of a proper continuation of the Firefly series. Georges Jeanty's artwork is sufficient enough to convey all the known characters well enough but, really, it's the story that's the selling point for this excellent entry into the Firefly universe.
