  • Rogue Trooper #1

    Released by: IDW Publishing
    Released on: March 5, 2014

7375-1 or just “Blue” is the titular blue-skinned character, the lone survivor of a special breed of troops designed to be better than others and able to survive the harsh environment of Nu-Earth. But they were betrayed and ambushed and wiped out - all except Blue who now travels the destroyed planet on his own investigative mission.

He's aided by the bio-chips of his expired teammates found in his gun, helmet and backpack. They not only assist in monitoring and maintenance but also provide quite literal voices in his head. He explains this to a rookie soldier named Breaker, a “Souther” soldier Blue rescues from a group of “Norter” troops that had captured him. The others have some reservations about helping Breaker but ultimately that's what Blue does.

Together, they take down more Norter troops and Blue's special capabilities get put on full display. He's a super-soldier but he's clearly deeply troubled, waking up yelling, his bio-scans unable to find what's wrong but being a lone survivor of a massacre can't be easy - even for him. Blue has a lone support contact in the Souther command named Angel that's helping him get at what actually happened - but that's not what the majority of that command are after. Alerted to Blue's existence, others assemble a gnarly-looking team of mercenaries to track down and capture Blue, dead or alive…

Brian Ruckley's script is outstanding, avoiding most cliches and yet giving new insights to this old character. Here, the Rogue Trooper isn't some soul-less killing machine but a man of pathos, identifiable as well as bad-ass. The artwork from Alberto Ponticelli is the real gem here, with incredibly rich details and robust uses of frame, shadow and perspective. An excellent kick off to this reboot this issue is very much worth picking up.
