  • Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #3

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: April 02, 2014

Det. Eckerd has finally skipped his clumsy attempts at wooing reporter Cindy and now has brought her in for questioning. Since the Lobster was seen leaving the offices of her employer and she was apparently the only one in the building, the police want to know what, exactly, they discussed. But with the detective getting nowhere it's up to the chief of police Higgins to step in and clear the air, framing LJ as a public menace and enemy #1.

Meanwhile, Dr. Emerson is upset that his heavily-sedated patient, the Devil Dwarf, has escaped from his hospital room. The mob protectors have been no help so Emerson leaves, disgusted, but wanting to locate his patient. On the way, though, LJ shows up and has his own questions.

During all this, Cindy returns to her office only to find all her research on LJ missing. It finds its way to the eager hands of some very bad and very rich men, the Cossaro Brothers. Also occurring at the same time is the final stage of some criminals' plan to rob 10 different bank vaults in a single night, knowing that even the combined forces of the police, F.B.I. and LJ can't possibly stop all of them. LJ learns of this plan from Emerson as well as bigger plans wherein the Cossaros were forcing Emerson to experiment on humans, to create radio-controlled people.

The vault heists commence, sending LJ into action against as many as he can. During this he encounters some of these “radio-controlled humans” and discovers how tough they are to put down. But when he's trapped inside one of the targeted banks - having dispatched the criminals already - by the police things go from bad to worse when Higgins shows up, declares LJ a potential threat too great to ignore, and lobs grenades in after him.

Mignola and Arcudi have many moving pieces here but it all happens in a very easy-to-follow manner. Tonci Zonjic gets to continue his masterful interpretation of Mignola's shadow-heavy style here again, too, continuing to make this series the lightest but, I think, most fun of the series Mignola's working on today.
