  • Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #3

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: March 26, 2014

Featuring a very snazzy cover by Dan Dos Santos, this issue catches the team off-guard but in transition. With Zoe headed to an Alliance prison and the psychotic bounty hunter Jubal loose (but unknown to the rest) on Serenity, time is given to River's vision while she's in her self-induced coma. She sees others like her that, to her, need rescuing. Mal and Liara are taking care of Zoe's baby, with Mal worried about his second's future. But, soon, Jubal has them all tied up and ready to deliver back to his employer when he's the one on the receiving end as Kailee knocks him out and gets some info from him later.

River is insistent on what needs to happen but Mal doesn't want to get sidetracked - that is, until River points out that having more team members with her abilities would make rescuing Zoe a great deal easier. Mal agrees but knows they'll still need someone special to help them out so he goes to the only person he knows that has the history, experience and ability to do so. Problem is, this same person also tried to kill them all recently - a sword-toting man known only as The Operative.

This issue really plays out nicely with plenty of long-established references to the original show. Zack Whedon is clearly comfortable in the pilot's seat here as he begins to heap trouble upon trouble on the crew. It all sounds like an episode arc from the show, it's so natural and imbued with the characters' personalities. Georges Jeanty's artwork is sufficiently up to the task here as well.
