  • Krampus! #4

    Released by: Image Comics
    Released on: March 26, 2014

Just as Krampus - while fighting Doc Holliday who's now a bounty hunter by cosmic mistake - has discovered the identity of the traitor in the midst of the Secret Society of Santa Clauses that traitor reveals himself in the midst of the coup. Turns out to be one Mos Gerila, an enemy of the society who killed and then impersonated Mos Craciun to infiltrate and get back at the society.

And, it turns out, Gerila is Holliday's employer so soon these two prime enemies of the society are together. But Krampus is still on his mission, wanting to stop this nefarious plot and it's only when Gerila, via his new magic powers thanks to owning the bones of St. Nicholas, snaps his fingers and removes the “naughty bomb” strapped to Krampus' chest (put there by the Santas to prevent him from reverting to his own naughty-punishing ways).

Gerila then is able to provide his backstory: A soldier selected for a special mission in the 50s by the Communist party in Romania, they had captured Craciun and replaced his role as Santa in that country with Gerila. But as soon as that government was out, so was Gerila, exiled and despised by the society, losing everything he loved in life. So, now, as part of his plan to strike back, he murdered Craciun and used all the magical powers of those bones to destabilize the society.

He wants Krampus' help since his plan is to now position himself as the one and only Santa - something right up Krampus' alley. Holliday, his payment finally delivered, thinks about helping fight Gerila but decides it's not his fight. Gerila summons the winter-inducing power of his captive, Old Man Winter, who now believes Krampus has gone over to this plan as well. Meanwhile, Krampus' loyal beast-dog, Stuttgardt, has survived what should have been his demise in the desert and returned to the North Pole, leaving the society to wonder what, exactly, is going on - but at least giving them a lead to follow, to find Gerila's secret, glyph-shielded lair.

Brian Joines' story just goes crazy here and for the better - the action accelerates here at a frenetic, goofy pace that's just a blast to behold. Dean Kotz' artwork also continues to dazzle, really giving each unique character their own style and presence that really helps navigate the story as well. Very much worth picking up!
