  • Judge Dredd: Mega-City Two #3

    Released by: IDW Publishing, Inc.
    Released on: Apr. 02, 2014

Continuing his time in the “City of Courts” on the sunny West Coast, Dredd finds himself paired with Judge Slater who attempts to explain how they do things out MC2 way. But then they're briefly attacked by a gigantic mutant shrimp in a big splash-panel. Such is life in the West Coast, apparently. (Nice touch to have the skywriting-plane with an, “I Am Sorry Geoff Darrow” in the background, too.)

Dredd's still being followed by the Dahlia Studios crew as arrest videos are the way to make it in MC2, apparently. So they're tagging along when Dredd and Slater are working at Bardot Point, an immigration point for refugees who match that day's casting call for television and film roles. Many are turned away but as they're riding away on their boat, exclaim, “Santos will save us!” Slater explains that this refers to some ex-Judge who dons a luchadore mask and promises to work for the benefit of the downtrodden.

Dredd is less than impressed but he and Slater have their hands full as one of these “extras” is known to Dredd as a felon that escaped MC1. But before he can get the guy to talk a mysterious sniper removes the perp's head. The studio liaison, Florence, is on the run from the scene when Dredd corner him next to the destroyed remains of one of Dahlia's cameramen. But, again, before Florence can divulge what's happened he's eaten by one of those monster shrimp.

Slater and Dredd head out to take care of these monster shrimp and they soon find their nest. Dredd gets a bio-producing service station to send out several machines to self-destruct in the nest in order to save the humans. He then makes himself a spear and gets to carve open the one that ate Florence, to get at the file folder he was holding when the shrimp took him. All this is caught on camera and Dredd begins to get into the role a bit, too. He's told by his MC1 superiors to trust no one in MC1 since Dredd's there on a secret mission, so getting into the spirit of things takes the heat off of him. It also softens him up to MC2's chief when Dredd makes the request to press his investigation into Melody Time, the “crimeland” of MC2 where no Judges go…

Douglas Wolk's story is pure Dredd fun, kicking into some high gear here with all the possibilities of Dredd in a new environment. Ulises Farinas' artwork is pretty snazzy, too, with the aforementioned Darrow-esque panel setup and some other knowing nods to that detail-oriented master of gross. This series remains a bit of a departure from the regular Dredd-verse but it's a very welcome, cartoony, fun change and shouldn't be missed by fans.
