  • The Massive #21

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: March 26, 2014

Yusup is taking Callum Israel, head of eco-avenging group Ninth Wave, to meet his arch-nemesis, Arkady, in Prague. There, though, Arkady is trying to get Ninth Wave founder and Cal-buddy Mag to turn on his old friend and stage a coup, taking control of the group and giving Arkady half the proceeds from all the plundering they could now do.

Cal is dying of cancer but has hidden that info from his teammates. He also has had a “my way or the highway” approach to running things that Mag doesn't appreciate. As Arkady is ready to execute Cal, getting him out of the way once and for all Mag knows his points are correct but sticks with his friend instead, giving them the opportunity to kill Arkady instead.

With that out of the way and the air cleared between them all, Cal, Mag and Yusup turn their attention to finding their missing ship, missing teammate Mary and the Massive itself. They explain their findings with the rest of the group, primary among them that Mary's story doesn't add up at all and how her song is tied into the existence of the Massive - and, perhaps, a precursor to the huge financial crash that's rocked the world recently.

Brian Wood's story covers a great deal of ground here but gets its chance for some closure that allows it to re-focus, much to its credit. Garry Brown's artwork is still outstanding here, too, with a heavy reliance on black and shadows helping give Wood's script some real menacing atmosphere as they keep on their mystery hunt.
