  • The Bunker #2

    Released by: Oni Press
    Released on: March 26, 2014

Present-day Grady gets a mysterious package delivered to his front door. Inside, he finds a faded copy of a newspaper featuring a headline that unsettles him - it even has a picture, of him, becoming a national hero as he rushes to save people injured in a terrorist attack. On that same date, in downtown San Francisco. There's a note on the paper, too, from future-Grady, telling him that by all counts this has to happen. The photo credit goes to his friend Heidi so he calls her in a panic and has her meet him near where the attack is supposed to occur.

Meanwhile, back at the mysterious bunker, Billy is face to face with future-Grady who seems to be only there to get his help in making sure everything that's supposed to happen does. He laments future-food and noisily slurps down a bowl of cereal in appreciation of what once was. But Billy is not convinced, even after seeing a video from his own future-self addressed to him, telling him to do what Grady says.

As innocent people are bound to die, then, all these characters in the present-day wrestle with letting something happen that's supposedly going to work out for the better. But as is clearly the case with this series the tendency of human desire is out of fear, not resolution, and Grady's got them all scared to death of messing with the unknown…

The story from Joshua Hale Fialkov continues its masterful mystery here and its great to see the action all accelerated. Likewise, the artwork from Joe Infurnari is focused when it's on the present-day characters but messily hazy when dealing with the future selves, echoing the sentiments of the story nicely and providing an excellent heightening to the overall tense mood.
