Witcher, The #2 (of 5)
Published by: Dark Horse Comics
Released on: Apr. 23, 2014
Writer: Paul Tobin
Artist: Joe Querio
Cover: Joe Querio
Geralt and Jakob enter TheHouse of Glass where they spotted Marta, Jakob's un-dead wife, looking out off the balcony, but find no sign of her. Searching around a bit, the two men find a door that contains some sort of monster who means to kill them. The Witcher shows off some of his powers and fights the beast with some magic of his own, and slays the creature…sort of.
They don't find Marta, and instead they find a freshly cooked feast and plentiful amounts of wine, but no one in sight to give credit for such a fine spread. This house possesses some sort of magic, no doubt. Geralt the Witcher has an uneasy feeling about the vast mansion they have found themselves in, and the medallion he wears on his chest is vibrating warnings to him.
After a few hours looking around a bit and resting up, Jakob decides he must go alone and search the mansion for his wife, leaving Geralt to his own. That time on his own is short-lived, and Geralt is faced with a new challenge…a succubus named Vara. The two have a fine discussion but this chick can't be trusted. The Witcher better be careful or he'll find himself a victim of the house.
This seems so far a by-the-numbers RPG-type of an adventure. That makes sense since the comic is based on a video game. Fight a monster, get some story, fight another one, and get some story. It's a formula and the story follows it, but it's still entertaining; it's just a bit kind of hollow. The story cooks right along and the limited amount of players, at least at this point, gives more time for some character development mixed in with the fighting. Querio's art helps the book maintain its interest level with his nasty monsters, which so far haven't failed to satisfy.
