  • Robotech/Voltron #3

    Released by: Dynamite Entertainment
    Released on: Apr. 23, 2014

Time and space get dramatically bent to throw all these parallel-Earth characters into conflict in this issue.

Leader of the Voltron Force Keith Kogane finds himself coming out of a coma on Macross Island, he and the rest of his team - Lance, Pidge and Hunk - prisoners of sorts there. The commissioned officers of the United Earth Government - the Robotech folks - have many questions for Kogane but are very aware of the idea that they all might be dealing with parallel-world versions of Earth here. Dr. Harry Penn gives a bit of the Robotech-verse history, about their discovery of the alien spaceship SDF-1 and the mecha they were able to create from it. Kogane, for his part, talks about the planet of Arus and the Galaxy Alliance that he's part of.

But before they can argue over this their interrogation is interrupted by the attack of alien spaceships, led by Lord Khyron who's after Zor's ship here. Kogane is returned to the rest of the team while the Robotech forces handle this new threat. There, it's Pidge who's pieced together much of what's probably going on, that they're on an earlier version of Earth, that they also don't know of this SDF-1 and that its appearance coincided with the Omega Comet as well as their own arrival in this timeline.

The story then cuts to Arus and evil Lord Zarkon killing a member of the royal family. His young son, Lotor, witnesses this but then the story hops forward to the time of King Lotar who wants to harness the space-time displacement capability of the Omega Comet. He can do so, he's told, through the power of the witch Haggar. Lotor wants to change the course of history but Haggar warns him that doing so might risk the return of Voltron but the king seems non-plussed.

Meanwhile, the Robotech troops are dealing with the invasion at the same moment that Haggar is opening the space-time portal. But that only allows for the arrival of the fully-manned and armed SDF-1, led by Captain Gloval. The ship defends itself against this new threat of Lotar's ships and the people of Arus see this as a return of war.

Juggling a whole lot of cross-referential characters and storylines from different ages this series will certainly satisfy any fans of either of the original series of Voltron and/or Robotech. Tommy Yune and Bill Spangler keep a great deal of plates spinning here but at least include enough action and references to keep it all fresh and entertaining. Elmer Damaso's artwork is a near-perfect replication of the original series as well, making this series a great deal of fun.
