  • Sherlock Holmes Moriarty Lives #3

    Released by: Dynamite Entertainment
    Released on: Apr. 23, 2014

An unique take in the world of Sherlock Holmes has Moriarty at its center as the evil character plots his return to prominence - by way of eliminating a new, sinister rival.

That rival is Baron Bombastus von Hohenheim and his right-hand man, Gustav, is almost completely in Moriarty's pocket. Moriarty has worked his way in disguise (as “Walther”) into the ranks of the Baron's thugs and sown disinformation around a rival gang in the nearby town trying to muscle them out. When a small group goes out to find this rival gang Walther goes with them and, through his usual deception, is able to find another group to stand in for them just so Walther can appear as the hero, bashing in the skulls of their attackers.

Meanwhile, Gustav and his son, Udo, have worked to mislead the Baron to think that Moriarty has left the country. Gustav's wife, Sara, is very concerned on her husband's attachment to Moriarity but Gustav will hear none of it. He only sees them profiting, though, so it's up to Sara to encourage Udo to get revenge on the baron for his birth-mother's death on his own…

Speaking of the baron, he's talking with Gustav about how best to keep the townsfolk in fear for their lives by introducing some supernatural elements. He's manipulating steam to create heavy fog but he needs them all to believe demons are at work. So he orders Gustav to find him someone who can carry out a more gruesome event, to really sell this idea. Walther naturally volunteers and gets the run-down from the baron while the latter is putting a human fetus into a cow…

Walther, upon leaving, hits on the baroness by quoting some Goethe and wins her over. Gustav, though, wants him to be on his horrible task and, overhearing this, the baroness launches upon the idea that Walther do something else, allowing them to rob the baron and escape together. Walther agrees and does indeed deliver “something else.” In all the commotion, then, Udo is able to infiltrate the baron's estate as a lowly kitchen boy, grimly determined to make the most of his own opportunity…

Moriarty has long been a character of great mystery in the world of Sherlock Holmes and author David Liss makes an interesting storyline to develop this famous villain. Daniel Indro and Olavo Costa provide excellent, moody detail with their artwork that really serves the story quite well. As the central issue in this run of five issues, it's proving very much a series worth following.
