  • Ash and the Army of Darkness #6

    Published by: Dynamite Entertainment
    Released on: Apr. 23rd, 2014
    Writer: Steve Niles
    Artist: Nacho Tenorio
    Cover artist: Justin Erickson
    Purchase at Amazon

Based on the cult favorite movie Army of Darkness, this series follows the story of Ash after the battle against the Deadites beside Eric the Red and King Arthur. Now, Sheila is once again possessed and Ash needs to go find her as well as that awful Book of the Dead. Armed with a new hand attachment, a sword (don't worry he has his chainsaw attachment as well), he saddles up and gets moving. But he must go alone. Eric and Arthur should stay behind as they'll slow him down plus they need to get their people to safety in case of another attack.

Ash runs into a group of people who worship him as The Savior From the Skies, going so far as to cut off their own right hands such as he did. After winning him over by filling his stomach, Ash tells them too much info that he should have kept to himself, and is probably going to wish he had done just that. Meanwhile, possessed Sheila continues to build her dead army and she has an idea about creating a patchwork Deadite. Should be interesting…But right now, Ash has other things to face, such as a gigantic humanoid beast that turns out to serve a bigger purpose than to just cause Ash to slow down for a fight.

The story continues in the same vein as the movie: it's corny at times, hokey at others, and has silly moments. The smart-talking Ash has plenty of shit-headed things to say, but in the end he's just a guy trying to do the right thing by people. Steve Niles captures the spirit of the character quite well and the illustration by Nacho Tenorio follows that up with plenty of hero moments and one-pagers. And he does pretty sweet looking monsters too.

This issue marks the jumping on point for this reader. It was enjoyable enough so that back issues will now be obtained and read, but if you know the movie you'll have no time starting the series with this issue. It's Ash from the Evil Dead movies, and he's fighting the dead. And with Steve Niles at the head of the train, it will no doubt continue to be an entertaining chapter in the life of Michigan native.

      Tormented – Movie Review:

The late Bert I. Gordon’s 1963 horror film, ‘Tormented,’ is an effectively spooky ghost story made with an obviously low budget but no less effective for it.

The story revolves around a professional piano player
