  • Serenity: Leaves On the Wind #4

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: Apr. 30, 2014

Now that they have The Operative on their side (sort of?) and aboard Serenity the crew can head to their next stop - the facility in which River had been imprisoned, to rescue those others like her that she keeps seeing in visions. As they depart, Mal asks Kaylee to dump the ship's trash, which now includes the bound-Jubal, seemingly the fitting end for his murderous ways…

No one aboard likes this arrangement much, though, given their recent history with The Operative. But to get into River's old holding facility and to rescue Zoe they know they're going to need any and all help they can. The resistance offers them another ship to get to the research facility, happy to be helping the legend that is Malcolm Reynolds. Meanwhile, Zoe's finally walking and able to take in more of her prison, an open-law place surrounded by merciless desert.

Once the team arrives at the facility and gain entry they soon realize that it's all a trap. While the Operative holds the others like him at bay outside the rest of the team - Mal, Jayne, River and Resistance member Bea - proceed into the depths. There, they find the head scientist who's glad to see River return. He laments her leaving him before he could make her complete - as that's apparently the state of the other girls just like River now who are under his command. As these girls' stasis tubes begin to open, River can only offer to whisper a horrified, “Run!” to her friends.

Whedon keeps the action coming nicely here, yet again, making this a highly entertaining series. Georges Jeanty's artwork is quite stellar here as well, getting all kinds of different scenarios and action scenes to show off with. Well worth picking up.
