  • The Walking Dead #125

    Released by: Image Comics
    Released on: Apr. 9, 2014

Negan thinks he won against Rick and his group and now wants their surrender so things can “get back to the way they were.” Whatever that truly means. Negan believes that turncoat Dwight shot Rick with a disease-ridden arrow, one that slowly and painfully killed Rick. But inside their camp Rick is just fine, able to continue to be the clear-headed leader they all need.

So they get a brief time to put together a plan to wipe Negan and his forces out completely, once and for all, before the villain appears yet again outside their camp. Demanding their surrender and asking to speak to whoever their new leader is, he's quite surprised when it's Rick that comes out to speak with him.

The two don't discuss surrender but, rather, how to put an end to their fighting and how best to work together to potentially rebuild society. Rick is very detailed and passionate, outlining how the two groups could remain as they are and how they could work out a barter system, something everyone could ultimately benefit from. This dialog takes up the majority of this issue and is so compelling that even Negan begins to see the wisdom in it. He admits he's tired of killing and just wants what's best for his people. Rick thinks that's fantastic - the way Negan's played into his trap, that is…

This issue represents the series at its best: Survivors are bent on doing just that in this new world, of trying to make something better out of it. The costs are high and the results are hard-earned in blood, though, so it takes someone who's realized what this new reality is all about to take advantage of it and actually follow through. Rick's evolution as a leader has done just that, finally justifying putting him at the forefront of the series. Robert Kirkman is at the top of his game here, clearly relishing the opportunity to finally fulfill his main character's destiny. Add to that Charlie Adlard's excellent work at detailing human faces that run the gamut of emotions all over the place in this issue and you have one outstanding entry in the long-running, excellent series.
