This story is great for someone like me, just hopping into the series for the first time. This issue is titled Part One: Breath of Ghosts and introduces the series' main characters and the world they inhabit in a very approachable manner.

A trio of main “human” characters is traveling through the desert, looking for some mystical bones that will provide more focus for their mission of survival. Abi is the female of the group, quick on the trigger but a good, action-oriented companion to talking-oriented seer Thomas and quiet telekinetic-powered Michael.

They're not finding the ruins they thought they were headed to when they're set upon by “sandeaters,” the indigenous, half-human/half-monster inhabitants that live under the sand. But after a display of his powers they believe Michael is some kind of god. They lead the trio to a clearly spiritual graveyard and Thomas is able to see what happened to create all the bones lying about.

He sees someone named Marcus having killed their older “brothers and sisters” and this causes Michael much distress. He has a history with this Marcus and, in his rage at having let Marcus live once upon a time, his telekinesis destroys a big chunk of the graveyard. Abi gets him to calm down and, as the others are debating what this all means, she also finds that there's now some kind of finished hole/passage leading underground…

Antony Johnson's story is sparse but not without compelling characters, action and empathy. That's quite a hefty chore, packing in so much with such minimalist elements but he's accomplishes it quite well here. Christopher Mitten's artwork is stark and detailed, the black and white printing only serving to heighten his dramatic style here.
