  • Judge Dredd Mega-City Two #4

    Released by: IDW Publishing
    Released on: Apr. 30, 2014

This issue playfully begins with a cartoon featuring Foley Fox and Barry Badger getting in some trouble with Dredd. Barry gets eaten and Foley learns a costly lesson - plus, kids are invited to find all the offenses they're guilty of in the strip!

Dredd and his policy-mandated video crew go into Mega-City Two's crime haven, Larceny Lane. There, Dredd gets to finally dispense some justice, Dredd-style. But, it turns out, it was just for the cameras. As Dredd's secret undercover mission moves forward he decides it best to play along so that the potentially highly corrupt Chief Judge Kennedy doesn't get suspicious.

Led by the cartoonish Barry and Foley they're all soon trying to find their vid-robot's missing head. They're soon joined by the mysterious Judge Santos. Barry and Foley provide a cartoony interlude then introducing this character and his possible origin. Seems that this former Judge is also on the same case as Dredd - seeking who is responsible for releasing Meg-City One criminals into Meg-City Two's streets and, ultimately, what's really going on inside that city's Mountain of Justice. Searching the office of their chief suspect they find a Judge's Lawbringer before they're set upon by nefarious forces.

They manage to escape by stealing a vehicle but only get as far as an old supermarket. Taking cover inside they're set upon again by their attackers. After Foley is wounded, Barry's the only one with a vid camera so Dredd has him patch into his helmet's video feed and what plays out next is the cartoonized-version of Dredd and Santos' fight back against their heavily-armed assailants. But it doesn't last long as the two Judges are soon encased in riot gel and carted off while Barry gets the axe for his efforts.

In their captured state, they're at the mercy of a sadistic bad guy who wants his boss' old Lawgiver back. But as Santos has it in his stuck hands he's just going to have to cut it out of Santos' possession. Dredd chastises Santos as some kind of poseur Judge but Santos, defiantly, tells him that's not the story. Santos also pulls the trigger for “high-ex” which of course causes a massive explosion, leaving pieces of the bad guy all over Dredd and Santos dead. But Dredd is able to escape then, too. He contacts Kennedy who's oblivious to all this and wants for vids for Dredd's last couple weeks there but Dredd has other plans…

Douglas Wolk's story continues to entertain, done so in a way that keeps the “fish out of water” idea fresh for Dredd. The artwork from Ulises Farinas covers quite a range, too, from Darrow-esque city scapes to the goofy Foley and Barry cartoon stories and is highly entertaining as well yet again here.
