Former mob hit man Joe Fitzgerald was killed along with the love of his life Laura. An angel brought him back to life but under a condition. If he dies in a righteous manner, he can see Laura for five minutes. He's learned her soul is wrongly trapped in Hell, and he makes his way through the gates to get her. He finds her, and he also finds the man who killed them both, and is the reason she is in Hell.

That man, known as the cult leader Brother James, takes the entire issue to explain things to Joe. The title of this issue is “Infernal Monologues” and it is very appropriate. But it's a much needed time to get things straight as the story gears up for the last act. Through a series of flashbacks, drawn by the series' artist for the first six issues, Brother James catches Joe (and the reader) up to speed as to what's going down and how Joe can free his true love Laura. It's quite obvious there is a lot more to Brother James than that of an egomaniacal cult leader, and after telling the-what-and-the-who of things, he makes Joe an offer that will free her soul. The price will be huge, but refusing the offer/proposition will be an even higher price.

Straczynski's story continues with its excellence, creating an end-of-times/armageddon scenario that keeps from getting stale and continues to be engrossing. Heaven vs. Hell stories can get hokey but he doesn't cross that path…ever. It's a great story that keeps the level of interest at its highest. And the artwork of C.P. Smith just elevates the book even higher. His atypical style really hits this reader of the head, and although the Templesmith flashbacks create a great contrast, the interruption in the flow of Smith's beautiful pages can be a distraction. And it takes away from more gorgeous panels from a talent to watch, hopefully for a long time.

Ten Grand is simply one of the best books out there. Great story telling, fantastic illustrations, demons, bloodshed, and a balding hero. We need more balding heroes.
