  • Veil #3

The warlock Cormac starts this issue by singing Witchcraft to himself, in his large abandoned house, clearly setting up some kind of magic trap there since he's summoned Veil to him. Outside, highly-trained goons of mob boss Scarborough watch from their car, waiting to get both Cormac and Veil in one fell swoop.

At a meeting of the top mob brass, Scarborough tells the other what happened earlier when they tried to stop Cormac. They also figure that the warlock wants Veil all to himself, rather than bringing her in for the mob. They figure they own her now and so they wait for Cormac to get her so they can get rid of him and get her, finally.

Veil, all alone now, is under Cormac's spell, the rats coming to her in various ways, leading her to their master. She walks, then, spellbound, into his trap, pleasing the warlock and alerting Scarborough's goons. He traps Veil in some kind of magic and she's clearly terrified. The heavily-armed, heavily-trained goons call in reinforcements and, hearing disturbing noises and screaming inside, bust into Cormac's place. He's there, alone, mocking them and before they can kill him he summons his new creation, his pet monster, the winged demon form that is/was Veil…

Author Greg Rucka really kicks the story into high gear here and Toni Fejzula's artwork keeps pace, gleefully detailing the insanity and destruction that are seeking the ruin of the heroine. In what is probably the best issue of this new series thus far, the stakes are raised to a new level of craziness that really leaves you begging for more.
