  • X #13

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: May 14, 2014

Unmasked and broken, X is still lying at the bottom of the pit, being visited by Deathwish who wants X to kill him before he dies. But X is craftier than that, playing possum so that Deathwish drags him out of the pit to get him to a defibrillator nearby. X attacks and just about kills him but then realizes that's what the villain wants so he uses that machine to resuscitate Deathwish - just so hX can then break a bunch of his bones and leave him again alive.

Meanwhile, crime boss Tango and his evil assistant Ella make their plans for taking out Ruidoso and the other good cops and getting their own people back into power. Ruidoso's pleading his case from prison as best he can in his failing effort, though. Elsewhere, Leigh is working now as the top informant on X for the feds. She's with them when they raid X's place and his secret stash of weapons (and the extra mask he desperately needs). She's thoroughly brainwashed now, believing Tango and Ella to be her saviours and that X is truly evil. So he sends her a nice little warning picture there on site, alerting the cops to his presence as well with a massive explosion.

This gives X the opportunity to sneak around and get his proper mask back on, remarking that he won't ever break his vow again, that the mask will remain on until his mission is accomplished. Leigh sees him do this but is too terrified to say anything to the cops with her. Back at the pit, Tango is finding what happened to Deathwish and that X has escaped. But he also gets some more bad news: Costumed gang members have knocked off one of their businesses in town. They also seem to be indestructible much, as they note, like X himself. And now that he's free and healed, X has business to get to…

This series continues to be just damn entertaining, clipping along at a fast, bloody pace and keeping the focus on its masked hero. Aleksi Bricot takes over on artwork duties from Eric Nguyen and applies his own style with aplomb here, keeping with the moodiness of the earlier issues quite well.
