  • Hellboy In Hell #6

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: May 14, 2014

Mike Mignola's titular character finds himself now in Hell itself, kinda stuck there, basically. He's chatting with some friendly companions, primarily a pair concerned with mapping out the location in its entirety. There's also a smoking monkey. They are soon joined by another entity that is just looking for someone to join him in a game of cards.

    Spoiler-y review follows here:

But this mysterious newcomer is actually there to settle some old score with Hellboy. The companions explain that he's actually the former Verger of St. Petersburg, cursed with the living death until someone beat him at his own game. That someone came along in the form of Hellboy who had a better had some many years prior.

But instead of being truly released he's seemingly stuck in the nightmare version of Prague. He kicks Hellboy around a great deal as a result. He's apparently the original vampire of that city and, as such, can assume many forms with which to kick Hellboy's butt, too. This fight gets interrupted, though, by a tolling bell wielded by an old priest. This minister to the damned is able, somehow, to offer some path to salvation, a way out of Hell itself, to just a few trapped, tormented souls. He tells Hellboy that he'll pray for him, thinking the hero to be either very brave or very blind…

Written and drawn by Mike Mignola, he's back at his peak form with his favorite character here and it's highly entertaining stuff. And the artwork is just top-notch, making this series an absolute must-have for any level of Mignola fan.
