  • The Massive #22

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: Apr. 23, 2014

Finally, the mysterious, elusive, recently-only-mentioned central character of Mary makes an appearance. Here, she's in the African desert, helping out the women of a large village to stand up for themselves and be independent. But when a massive water project needs security to transport it from nearby all the way to Morocco the drill team needs women as the men are busing drilling. She identifies herself as a former child soldier and gets a slight pay bump when she joins the effort.

Apparently, during The Crash, the Red Sea and Suez disappeared, plunging the whole area into desolation. Now, the House of Saud is establishing an empire by purchasing a third of the water reserves the Saudis have discovered. The amount of water involved requires a massive convoy of 300 trucks to slowly transport the precious cargo across the Sahara.

Mary is clearly in charge, her experience speaking to action as she organizes the teams of women aboard the truck (on the top, the sides and one in the cabin). The male driver and navigator don't care much for the situation but they all set out regardless. When they have to stop due to a sandstorm the women get an opportunity to talk more with Mary, the mysterious outsider. They ask for a story so she tells them one of a massive set of similar storms that lasted for 10 years, in America, and that she witnessed it. But, the women whisper in their native tongue, that was over 100 years ago…

Before Mary can answer their suspicions, though, two quick shots ring out from the cabin. The women rush forward to find the navigator dead and the driver wounded. He's blaming the woman in the cab with the smoking gun. But her story tells of the driver trying to sell them all out, shooting the navigator when he attempted to stop him. Mary and the women know how this will play out, with them all being blamed since they are “just women” and all of them paying the price. Mary has other plans, though, and finishes off the wounded driver, letting the storm then hide the men's bodies. She apparently can drive one of these rigs and so they continue on, responding to the radio summons to report in for coordination. Now, she only has to wonder what to do when control questions why a woman is answering for their truck…

This issue, part one of three in a storyline titled Sahara, is a great break from the Callum Israel story dominating the recent issues. Brian Wood does a fantastic job with the mysterious Mary, seemingly the key to everything behind The Massive. Danijel Zezelj is very good in keeping the characters identifiable and focused within the sprawling desert setting for the story and that really helps the story out as well. This is a great point to hop into this cool series if you haven't yet made that leap.
