  • Honey Buns

    Released by: Impulse Pictures

    Director: James Chiara
Cast: Rene Bond, Ushi Digard, Matt Hewitt, Sandy Carey
    Year: 1973
    Purchase From Amazon

    The Movie:

In this film, originally released as Heads Or Tails (which would seem to be a softcore film, meaning the hardcore shots in this one are inserts), Honey Buns follows a working stiff named Harry (Matt Hewitt) who toils away at his dead end job at the 'Internally Yours Feminine Hygiene Company.' One morning on his way into work he becomes intrigued by the shapely female ass walking up the stairs in front of him. The woman (Uschi Digard) turns around and asks him directions to the ladies room. He obliges and heads into the office where his boss bitches him out before taking the curvy secretary, Marsha (Rene Bond), into his office for a hummer.

Harry's not got the best of luck with the ladies and he knows it. When he meets up with a bearded hippie in a top hat calling himself 'The Magician' (Harvey Whippsnake) who claims to be able to fix all of his problems with a pill, he's understandably intrigued. He takes the pill and, while doing the dishes, wishes he had some company. Low and behold, a woman clad only in an apron calling herself Do-It (Becky Sharpe) appears and after helping with the dishes, they get down… and then she disappears. Shortly after he sees a woman in his bedroom calling herself Delicious (Sandy Carey) but before he can go down for keeps, poof, she's gone too.

Will Harvey be able to figure out why these lovely ladies are disappearing as quickly as they're appearing in time to get it on in a furious four way orgy with two blondes and a nicely built dark haired less in fine lingerie named Right-Guard (Starlyn Simone)? Well, without wanting to spoil anything…. Yeah. He probably will.

At just short of seventy-five minutes in length this one is quick, breezy and fun. Nothing here is played straight, the sex scenes are pretty playful and the cast all appear to be having a good time fooling around for the camera. The dialogue seems like it was partially scripted and partially improvised as sometimes it flows fairly naturally and other times comes across as magically stilted in that wonderful way seventies porn dialogue often does. The cinematography and locations are nothing to write home about, most of the movie takes place inside the office or Harry's apartment, but the cast sell this one effectively enough that fans of low rent sex films should get a kick out of it.

The coupling is plentiful enough to count but never too drawn out or even close to mean spirited. As such, the movie maintains a very playful mood, not just in the steamy scenes but during the plot oriented scenes that take place in between. Matt Hewitt is actually pretty funny here, he's got a good sense of comedic timing and the kind of face that's ripe for laughs. Rene Bond sexes it up for him early in the film by showing off her goods and goes into the boss' office for a bit but doesn't appear afterwards. Likewise, Uschi also leaves the film once the action goes from the office to other locations, which is a shame as the opening seems like it's setting her character up for a more important part. Nope. But hey, do you really need an excuse to put Uschi in a movie? Nope. Even if she never disrobes it is nothing short of rad to see her here. This one doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's got a good cast, the ladies are all quite attractive, and it is often genuinely funny, all of which makes Honey Buns a fun, sexy time killer.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Impulse Pictures presents Honey Buns in 1.33.1 fullframe in a transfer that looks to be sourced from unrestored film elements. The opening credits look pretty rough, lots of print damage here, but thankfully things settle down after that. There are still some specks and scratches but colors stay nice and distinct and detail isn't half bad. No compression artifacts or digital tinkering to note. This won't blow you away but it looks decent.

The English language Dolby Digital Mono track is fine. The dialogue is pretty easy to follow and the score is fairly clear. A bit of hiss here and there but the levels are properly balanced. This gets the job done.

No, extras just a static menu offering chapter selection, that's it.

    The Final Word:

Honey Buns isn't deep nor is it particularly life changing but it is fun and given that it features both Bond and Digard in supporting roles it's bound to be of interest to seventies smut aficionados, particularly those who appreciate low budgets and bad comedy. Impulse's DVD looks and sounds okay even if, like a lot of their output, it's barebones. Given the obscurity of this one, it'll do!
